Vaughan's character (Billy) and Wilson's character (Nick) are salesmen for a watch company. They work in a realm where you pitch the product and reel in the biters, and that's all they've ever known. Not being college educated, they rely on their skills and experience rather than scholastic merit and qualification. As the inevitable technological advances of our day in age continue, business gets slow and the company owner closes his doors. Wearable technology and cell phones may be slowly replacing the watch we know and love, but we need to make way for the future, sometimes in the form of making current products obsolete. Nick and Billy lose their houses and girlfriends, and are left to fend for themselves in the vast labour market dominated by twenty-something college graduates with the technical know-how the companies of today are looking for.
Billy starts his job hunt and has a sudden realisation while Googling "sales jobs." Why not apply for an internship that may or may not lead to a job at Google? Nick thinks Billy is properly insane for having the idea. It may as well be a lost cause competing with the Ivy-league geek squad that makes up the Google application pool. But that didn't stop Billy from convincing him to at least put their names out there. Sure enough, after a few shenanigans during an online interview, they land the internship and go out to Google headquarters to compete with young, brilliant, and sometimes arrogant minds that all want to land that dream job.
The point this movie really drives home well is that anyone who sets their mind to achieve a goal can very well do so, but it is only true as long as you have someone who is willing to take a chance on your abilities. One of the board members had brought them to Google because they were out of the box thinkers. Not every company is searching for the latest and greatest; even the biggest ones out there just want a few hard-working individuals who are willing to learn and adapt. The stigma that surrounds not going to college and not being a "professional" was something that I struggled with for a while and occasionally think about (as I sit here writing an English class assignment). The real take-home I had from all this is if anyone going into this film doubts their own skills and prowess in life, it will definitely make you reconsider and provide a few laughs along the way.
